In recent years, cultural institutions across all sectors have been working on integrated concepts to drive the digital transformation of their educational outreach. In the process, digital interactive activities, and in particular game-based learning, have established themselves as successful and sustainable techniques that engage younger target groups.

Initially, stationary display arrangements constituted the majority of technological platforms. However, today, immersive technologies such as virtual reality (VR) goggles and augmented reality (AR) smartphones are increasingly gaining popularity. These technologies engage visitors on a new level by projecting spatial and explorable virtual worlds into our physical reality. This potential to bring cultural heritage (back) to life offers visitors participatory experiences they can truly relate to.

But how can we fully exploit the unique affordances of the interactive immersive medium while considering the specific contexts and circumstances of cultural institutions?

We invite scholars, practitioners, and professionals to submit abstracts that explore various perspectives on the intersection of immersive technology and cultural heritage to discuss opportunities and challenges for institutions, audiences, and game developers.

We are particularly interested in, but not limited to, the following perspectives:

  • Philosophical Perspectives: Inquiries into the philosophical implications and ethical considerations of using immersive technology in cultural contexts.
  • (Technological) Historical Perspectives: Explorations of the historical development and evolution of immersive technologies and their impact on cultural heritage.
  • Sociological Approaches: Investigations into how immersive technologies influence societal interactions with cultural heritage and the implications for different audience demographics.
  • Design Science Approaches: Studies on the design, implementation, and evaluation of immersive experiences tailored to cultural heritage settings.
  • Museological / Museum Educational Approaches: Case studies and research on the integration of immersive technologies in museums and cultural institutions to enhance educational outreach.
  • Meta-Analyses: Comprehensive reviews and studies that synthesize existing research on immersive technology in cultural heritage.

Submission Guidelines:

Interested contributors are invited to submit an abstract of up to 500 words by July 22, 2024. Abstracts should clearly outline the proposed contribution, including the research question, methodology, and expected findings or insights.

Authors of selected abstracts will be notified and invited to submit full chapters by October 1, 2024.
